Common Exception Words
Below are the Common Exception Words for Years 1 and 2 which children need to be able to read by the end of the key stage. These are words which do not follow the common phonetic spelling rules which children learn in Years 1 and 2.
As they are not decodable using acquired rules and letter sounds in phonics they need to be learned by sight.
Some of these will also be included as tricky words on the letters and sounds program.
