Look, say, cover, write, check is a strategy to help children spell words which are not phonetic e.g. was, could.
There are tricky words in each phase of the letters and sounds program we follow in phonics and these are shown in the paler boxes (see inside back cover for full list).
There are also additional words which we need to learn on a ‘common exception words’ list for each year group and the look, say, cover, write, check strategy can also be used for these.
A child should never attempt to spell words which they have not demonstrated they can read correctly consistently. For this reason, if your child is reading a phase 3 bookmark they only need to spell the phase 2 tricky words.
The spelling book in your phonic pack is for you to practise the tricky word spellings from the phase(s) below that which your child is practising to read. See the ‘how to use my spelling book…’ for instructions. In the 2nd step of ‘say the word out loud’ I would also add in to say the letter names. For example, if learning to spell ‘was’ - say the word ’was’ then ’w’ ’a’ ’s’ using the names of the letters not the sounds the letters make...otherwise the word sounds like wass! You will need to fold the page back when doing try number 2.
Only attempt 3-6 spellings at a time and little and often is best. The book is printed as ‘weekly’ word lists but don’t let that restrict you!
Every now and then give your child a short sentence which includes a word they have been practising, if they apply the spelling correctly then move on. If not then practise it again. It is important to return to previous words practised from time to time to secure learning. They will need to be returned to after a few days and a few weeks so our brains don’t forget!
