Understanding the World

Our "Understanding the World" curriculum includes learning about the following curriculum areas: science, technology, computing, history, geography, religious education and foreign languages. Many of these subjects overlap and enable us to make cross-curricular links as part of broad topics.

Understanding the World in the Early Years Curriculum

People and Communities:

As part of the Early Learning goals in Reception the children learn to:

  • talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members;
  • know that other children don't always enjoy the same things, and are sensitive to this;
  • know about similarities and differences between themselves and other, and among families, communities and traditions.

The World:

As part of the Early Learning goals in Reception the children learn to:

  • know about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things;
  • talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one to another;
  • make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes.

Technology:

As part of the Early Learning goals in Reception the children learn to:

  • recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools;
  • select and use technology for particular purposes.
