Creative and Expressive Arts

Our "Creative and Expressive Arts" curriculum includes learning about the following curriculum areas: art and design, music, drama and dance. We teach the specific skills of each area of the arts and then apply them to work done in other curriculum areas, such as the speaking and performing strand of English, or the topic work from the "Understanding the World" curriculum.

Expressive arts and design in the Early Years Curriculum

Exploring and using media and materials:

As part of the Early Learning goals in Reception the children learn to:

  • sing songs, make music and dance, and experiment with ways of changing them;
  • safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.

Being imaginative:

As part of the Early Learning goals in Reception the children learn to:

  • use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes;
  • present their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role-play and stories.
